Established in 1926, Grand Rapids Civic Theatre is one of the leading community theatres in the nation.
Grand Rapids Civic Theatre and School of Theatre Arts produces multiple MainStage productions each year, and conducts a thriving theatre education program in its 85,000 square foot facility. Nestled in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, Civic’s home features the historic Meijer Majestic Theatre. With a newly shared mission to “Inspire creativity and personal growth, Illuminate our common humanity, and Ignite connection across our community… through the power of Theatre Arts”, Civic continues their longstanding tradition of quality as they look towards the future, meeting the demands and needs of a changing world while celebrating and uplifting the community around them.
More than 600 volunteers led by a professional staff bring theatre magic to life for West Michigan. You’ll find your neighbors, teachers, doctors, lawyers, baristas, students, and other area professionals filling roles on stage as well as off-stage by serving as crew members, ushers, greeters, archivists, and flourishing in creative spaces like the costume shop, scene shop, and props shop. The teaching artist faculty of the School of Theatre Arts leads, mentors, and inspires more than 1200 students annually; Civic’s educational programming ranges from “Broadway Babies” designed for little ones ages 2-3 to opportunities for students of all ages to adult classes in improv, directing, dance, and more. Making its debut in 2022, Young Artist Studio is a 10 month intensive combining training, resources, masterclasses, performance opportunities and mentorship for students in grades 7-12 who are passionate about pursuing a career in the theatre arts.
Your friends and family can enjoy Civic’s 2023/24 season beginning this September with the West Michigan community theatre premiere of The SpongeBob Musical! A celebration of inclusivity and community, SpongeBob and his friends will delight young audiences as well as entertain and enlighten adults with a meaningful and heartfelt story and a variety of original songs by favorite artists like Sara Barielles, Aerosmith, T.I., John Legend, Panic! At The Disco, and more. Other MainStage productions this season are Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Clyde’s, Disney’s Descendants, Murder On The Orient Express, the 4th Annual Ten For All Playwriting Festival, and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
