What You Need To Know About The Final Form 2020 W-4

(1-3 minute read)

On December 5, 2019, the Internal Revenue Service released the final form W-4 for 2020. The form includes major revisions from previous years, including new inputs for federal income tax withholding calculations. Any employee with a hire date in 2019 or before is not required to fill out a new form. Employees with a first paycheck dated in 2020 and beyond will need to fill out the new form W-4, and employees making changes to their withholding will be subject to the new process.

Major changes to the Final 2020 Form W-4 include:

  • Number of withholding allowances eliminated
  • New Marital Status – Head of Household (with associated tax tables)
  • Estimation of total annual wages for individual or household
  • Lines to claim exemption from withholding were removed

Both Axios HR & Staffing Inc. clients will see these changes reflected in the Employee Self Service websites for employees wishing to adjust their tax settings starting January 1, 2020.

Employees requiring assistance with the new process should reference the FAQ’s provided by the IRS, available at: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/faqs-on-the-2020-form-w-4.
